Do you want to create lasting memories with your parents? Is it your dream to experience something new with them? Travel can be a wonderful opportuniity to bond and not breaking the bank.
But you might ask, Singapore is a destination I have in mind – it’s a blend of modern with rich culture can I afford it?
Yes! There is no rush to travel immediately. All you need is proper planning of your finances, itinerary, accomdation, daily expenses and length of stay.
Let’s talk about Singapore, an ideal destination for a family trip and how me and my sister were able to afford this once in a lifetime experience.
Planning Your Itinerary
First of alll, how old are your parents. And I don’t mean to limit your options in terms of activitiies but to craft the perfect itinerary, consider you parents’ energy, what their preferences are and what activities will they enjoy the most?
For example, my dad’s pretty game at anything even with food. He can eat spicy but my mom’s not a fan of spicy foods. Both wake up way early as part of their dailly routine and so having this in mind we need to meet halfway through our schedule. My sister and I usually work at night so our normal morning routine starts just before lunch.
Do they enjoy history and culture? Are they more into outdoor activities? Does your mom love shopping? My mom’s religous and so she wanted to explore churches.
Perhaps you want to go places where you and your parents have never experienced before. It is your travel too, remember!
Take note of public holidays because other popular distination tends to be crowded or worst, closed. Better check before going there.

Let’s Talk Finance And Budget Consideration
You can manage your budget by carefully planning your activities. Singapore is a relatively expensive city so here are some tips to help you plan your travel.
Accommodation: Gaylang may seem to be an odd location for travelling families but the area is safe. Half of our budget were spent in our hotel so choose a hotel or apartment that fits your budget and location preferences.
Consider staying outside the city center for cheaper options or utilize family-friendly hostels. We booked a hotel about 20 minutes by bus from the city center but public transportation in Singapore in convenient and efficient.
Transportation: MRT, buses, or even taxis and GRAB are available in Singapore but definitintely buses are train rides are your best options. They also offer unlimited Singapore Tourist Pass within a specific timeframe.
Dining: Local hawker centers and food courts offer affordable and deliciousl healthy meals. If you stay in Gaylang, you can go out at night when you’re hungry as the area has restaurants and convenient stores open 24 hours.
The city tends to be hot and humid during the summer so bring your water to save on expenses. Additionallly you can even pack a snack in case you get hungry.
Activities: If you get the unlimited MRT tourist pass, you can save a lot of money granting you have the energy the entire day. Singapore has parks where you can stroll for free. Other low-cost or even free activities are visiting temples or churches, and exploring cultural districts or strolling along beautiful parks and garden.
To maximize your visit, combine paid and free attractions. Be sure to check your parents. Sometimes a half day of walking and strolling is too much for them. Take a break when you can or in our case, our parents spent every other day resting at the hostel and just going out for lunch and dinner because some days are too taxing for them.
